Is Technology Really That Necessary For Our Lives?

Technology has begun to shape our lives in a way that no one could have predicted years ago. We have become reliant on technology in all its shapes and sizes over the last 10 years in such a way that is staggering to me. Without our laptops, cell phones, Bluetooth devices, touch screens, media players, and the host of other technological devices that would be do with all of our time?

Every human activity that is now a device that you just have to have to make that activity “faster” or “better”. For example if you want to go find a restaurant the look on your iPhone for application is made specifically to help you find restaurants. Once you are at the restaurant you can use your iPhone to look at that restaurant's menu online to avoid rocking the 15 feet up to the concierge desk and getting yourself a menu. For every activity you can imagine there is some technology cool device that you're supposed to use and all your friends are currently using.

I have seen several of my friends now are getting these DVRs to work with their antennas instead of cable, and they rant and rave about it. Just another tech fad, or the next big thing? This technological peer pressure has become part of our culture and is very beneficial to the manufacturers of all these tech devices. Everyone has to have at least two TVs, everyone has to at least own an iPod and a laptop and most people even own Bluetooth devices for hands-free cell phone use. This is just the beginning of the list of technological devices that you're supposed to have. I think the moment about how much money we spend every single year on these devices, and how much time we spend learning these devices, using these devices, and ultimately relying on these devices. The majority of people never stop to think about this, but it is something that I have been thinking about the last couple months as I look forward into the future.

I am almost afraid to see what the future looks like in 20 years. There'll be a device for everything under the sun and the technological peer pressure will be there as well. Nowadays people wonder what is wrong with you if you do not have a smart phone that can get on the Internet. You also get strange stares if you meet someone on the street and they find out you do not own a laptop computer. Just imagine in 20 years when having a microchip somewhere implanted in your body is the way that you for items at the grocery store. Much like it has become common place now for the microchips in their dogs and cats so that if they get laws they can find them later and all the owners information will be in a database that microchip allows them to access. Not only will you have all the devices that we have today but they will be smaller and less expensive and even more useless.

All I want to accomplish this article is to make you stop and think for a moment. All of this technology does nothing to improve the human condition on planet Earth. It is not that the technology is bad or that technology is not necessary for certain things, it is just that I think we rely on technology too much in our interpersonal relationships. I think you should go over to your friends house and hang out. Back when people did that friendships were stronger, friendships lasted longer, and the friendships ran deep. All this technology is meant to bring us closer together but is it really bringing us closer together, or is it driving us further apart by making it easier to stay at our house at all times?

Just think about that next time use Skype with your best friend instead of having lunch at their house.
